:: New York State senate fails

to pass the healthy teens act ::

The New York State Senate failed to pass the Healthy Teens Act before the close of the 2006 legislative session. This was a missed opportunity to help thousands of young people prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

While the Healthy Teens Act did not become law this year, there is much to be proud of. The work we did in support of sex education made a real difference. During this legislative session, tens of thousands of voices were heard in the halls of the State Capitol. Legislators and staff are finally talking about sex education. The Healthy Teens Act was moved by the Senate for the first time ever. The Senate Health Committee reported the bill favorably with only one negative vote. These are amazing accomplishments that all the emails, faxes, and phone calls helped to achieve.

We know that the legislative process is often long and frustrating. But all that work will not be erased. It will lay the groundwork for next year.

G et the Facts NY will continue its work to improve sex education across New York State. Please keep posted on this web site for future updates and opportunities.
